National Updates

• The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in coordination with state police authorities has busted a transnational drug network involving foreign nationals overstaying in India, seizing drugs worth around 15 crore rupees and arresting four Nigerian nationals.

• The National Testing Agency has revamped its examination team by removing 600 experts and on boarding new experts. In a social media post, the Ministry of Education said that a four-tier question paper checking system will be put in place by NTA to strengthen the scrutiny of examination papers.

• The Supreme Court said it would constitute a high-powered committee comprising retired apex court and high court judges, a former DGP, and an ex-CBI director to examine allegations of police excesses against student protesters in Delhi recently and violence against police personnel.

• Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the gauge-converted Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur rail section in Madhya Pradesh through video conferencing. The Minister also flagged off the extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train up to Birpur virtually.

• Digital Bharat Nidhi, under the Department of Telecommunications, signed an agreement with Chhattisgarh Government, Chhattisgarh State BharatNet Infrastructure Limited, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Chhattisgarh Infotech Promotion Society for implementation of the Amended BharatNet.

• The Government has debunked claims circulating on social media that loans are being provided under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana on payment of a meagre amount. The Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) informed that the letter is fake.

• The government has proposed a five-year extension in the permissible age of battery-operated, hydrogen fuel-based and natural gas-driven commercial vehicles covered under the national permit system. The proposal is part of draft amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

• Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered authorities to transfer jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan to Islamabad’s Shifa International Hospital for a comprehensive medical examination within the next few days.

• Iran said that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed to maritime traffic until all Iranian conditions under the 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the US are fully met.

• A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Nias Island in Indonesia’s North Sumatra province. According to the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, the earthquake occurred at 1:02 p.m. local time (0602 GMT), with its epicentre located about 147 km southeast of South Nias regency.

• Amid escalating unrest in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the United Kashmir People’s National Party, has drawn the attention of the international community to human rights abuses by Pakistani forces in the region.

• Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema has been re-elected for a second five-year term. The Electoral Commission of Zambia has announced the result. President Hichilema secured more than 51 per cent of the votes, winning the presidential election outright and avoiding a run-off.

• Ace shuttler Lakshya Sen has entered the men’s singles second round at the BWF Badminton World Championships. He defeated Collins Filimon of Austria in the opening round. The Indian shuttler was down after the first game at 16-21.

• In Men’s Cricket, Hosts Sri Lanka were 84 for 4 in their second innings against India at stumps on the fourth day of the first Test in Galle. Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva remained at the crease when stumps were drawn last evening.
