National Updates

• The Parliament has passed the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill 2024, with the Rajya Sabha approving it. The Lok Sabha had passed it in December last year. The Bill amends the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and intends to strengthen the efficient working of the National Disaster Management.

• The Parliament has passed the Boilers Bill, 2024, with the Lok Sabha approving it. The Bill repeals the Boilers Act, 1923, and seeks to provide for the regulation of boilers and the safety of life and property of persons from the danger of explosions of steamboilers.

• The 33rd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) was held in Beijing, China.

• The Centre has approved two development projects for Punjab, aimed at honouring the sacrifices of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev at Khatkar Kalan and Hussainiwala in Ferozepur, where the trio was cremated.

• The international sports governing body, World Athletics, has approved the introduction of mandatory cheek swabbing to determine an athlete’s gender. The organisation’s president, Sebastian Coe, said a decision was made to doggedly protect the female category in the sport.

• Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta today said that this year’s Delhi Budget has seen a 31.58 per cent increase from the previous year, with a total allocation of one lakh crore rupees.

• The Lok Sabha has passed the Finance Bill, 2025, incorporating 35 government amendments aimed at tariff rationalisation and boosting domestic manufacturing. The Bill seeks to give effect to the financial proposals of the Central Government for the financial year 2025-2026.

• The Labour and Employment Ministry, in collaboration with the States and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), has begun the social protection data pooling exercise in the country.

• संसद ने आपदा प्रबंधन (संशोधन) विधेयक २०२४ पारित कर दिया है, जिसे राज्यसभा ने मंजूरी दे दी है। लोकसभा ने पिछले साल दिसंबर में इसे पारित किया था। विधेयक आपदा प्रबंधन अधिनियम, २००५ में संशोधन करता है, और राष्ट्रीय आपदा प्रबंधन के कुशल कामकाज को मजबूत करने का इरादा रखता है।
• संसद ने बॉयलर विधेयक, २०२४ को लोकसभा की मंजूरी के साथ पारित कर दिया है। विधेयक बॉयलर अधिनियम, 1923 को निरस्त करता है, और बॉयलर के विनियमन और स्टीमबॉयलर के विस्फोट के खतरे से व्यक्तियों के जीवन और संपत्ति की सुरक्षा प्रदान करना चाहता है।

• A bipartisan duo of U.S. lawmakers has introduced legislation calling for sanctions on Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir and other generals and officials for the prosecution of political opponents, including the imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

• The Bangladesh Army has refuted a report published by an Indian private media outlet, claiming an ‘impending coup’ as completely unfounded and misleading.

• In Japan, a court has ordered the dissolution of the Unification Church after a government request spurred by the investigation into the 2022 assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

• The Government of Nepal is hosting the first Sagarmatha Sambaad in Kathmandu from 16 to 18 May 2025 on ‘Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity.’
