National Updates

• Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal met with Peru’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister, Úrsula Desilú León Chempén, in New Delhi. During the meeting, Mr Goyal discussed strengthening economic ties and accelerating Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between the two countries.

• The government has given the nod for the procurement of 1350 HP engines for T-90 tanks, Varunastra Torpedoes and Airborne Early Warning and Control Aircraft systems. The approval was given during the Defence Acquisition Council meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

• Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh held discussions with Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates in New Delhi. The meeting aimed to expand private sector and startup participation in India’s innovation push and biomanufacturing surge.

• The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) added 17 lakh 89 thousand members in January this year. This represents an increase of 11.48 percent in net members compared to December 2024. The Ministry of Labour and Employment attributed this surge to growing employment opportunities.

• Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the Narendra Modi government is moving forward with a ruthless approach against the Naxalites. Mr Shah said the government is adopting a zero-tolerance policy against those extremists who are not surrendering despite all the facilities being offered.

• वाणिज्य और उद्योग मंत्री पीयूष गोयल ने नई दिल्ली में पेरू के विदेश व्यापार और पर्यटन मंत्री, उर्सुला डेसिलु लियोन चेम्पेन के साथ मुलाकात की। बैठक के दौरान श्री गोयल ने दोनों देशों के बीच आर्थिक संबंधों को मजबूत करने और मुक्त व्यापार समझौते (एफटीए) वार्ता में तेजी लाने पर चर्चा की।
• सरकार ने टी-90 टैंक, वरुणास्त्र टॉरपीडो और एयरबोर्न अर्ली वार्निंग एंड कंट्रोल एयरक्राफ्ट सिस्टम के लिए 1350 एचपी इंजन की खरीद को मंजूरी दे दी है। रक्षा मंत्री राजनाथ सिंह की अध्यक्षता में रक्षा अधिग्रहण परिषद की बैठक के दौरान मंजूरी दी गई।
• विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी मंत्री डॉ जितेंद्र सिंह ने नई दिल्ली में माइक्रोसॉफ्ट के सह-संस्थापक और परोपकारी बिल गेट्स के साथ चर्चा की। बैठक का उद्देश्य भारत के नवाचार धक्का और जैव विनिर्माण उछाल में निजी क्षेत्र और स्टार्टअप भागीदारी का विस्तार करना था।
• कर्मचारी भविष्य निधि संगठन (ईपीएफओ) ने इस साल जनवरी में १७ लाख ८९ हजार सदस्य जोड़े। यह दिसंबर २०२४ की तुलना में शुद्ध सदस्यों में ११.४८ प्रतिशत की वृद्धि दर्शाता है। श्रम और रोजगार मंत्रालय ने इस उछाल के लिए रोजगार के बढ़ते अवसरों को जिम्मेदार ठहराया।
• केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री अमित शाह ने कहा है कि नरेंद्र मोदी सरकार नक्सलियों के खिलाफ निर्मम दृष्टिकोण के साथ आगे बढ़ रही है। श्री शाह ने कहा कि सरकार उन चरमपंथियों के खिलाफ शून्य-सहिष्णुता की नीति अपना रही है जो सभी सुविधाओं की पेशकश के बावजूद आत्मसमर्पण नहीं कर रहे हैं।

• Sri Lanka’s Election Commission has said that the much-delayed Local Government election will be held on May 6. The poll body announced after accepting nominations from political parties and independent groups.

• World Sparrow Day is being observed worldwide today, marking an annual effort to raise awareness about the rapid decline in sparrow populations

• International Happiness Day- IHD is being observed across the globe. The day is observed to recognize the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives.

• After nearly 40 years away from home and facing significant health challenges, 85-year-old Dr. Rashid Anwar Dhar is finally returning to the embrace of his hometown and family in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir.

• US Federal Reserve has kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged in the 4.25 per cent to 4.50 per cent range.

• The International Olympic Committee (IOC) member states unanimously voted to include Boxing in the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. During the voting held, all raised hands in favour of boxing’s inclusion in the LA Games, with no one abstaining or voting against it.

• Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar inaugurated ISTAF “Sepak Takraw 2025” World Cup in Patna.
