National Updates

• Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government is striving to improve the socio-economic status of all communities, including minority communities, through various schemes and incentives.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bill Gates, the founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in New Delhi.

• Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar said that terrorism remains a dynamic and evolving challenge, with the use of advanced technology necessitating a cohesive and action-oriented approach. He made these remarks during the keynote address at the 14th meeting of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’.

• External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met the Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba, Dr. Eduardo Martinez Diaz, on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue 2025 in New Delhi.

• Union Home Minister Amit Shah took exception to TMC MP Saket Gokhale for raking up the issue of CBI during the discussion in Rajya Sabha on the working of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

• The government approved an incentive scheme for the promotion of low-value BHIM-UPI transactions. The scheme will be implemented at an estimated outlay of one thousand 500 crore rupees.

• External Affairs Ministry expressed concern over the situation in Gaza. In a statement, the Ministry stressed the importance of the release of all hostages.

• अल्पसंख्यक मामलों के मंत्री किरेन रिजिजू ने कहा कि सरकार विभिन्न योजनाओं और प्रोत्साहनों के माध्यम से अल्पसंख्यक समुदायों सहित सभी समुदायों की सामाजिक-आर्थिक स्थिति में सुधार करने का प्रयास कर रही है।
• प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने नई दिल्ली में बिल एंड मेलिंडा गेट्स फाउंडेशन के संस्थापक बिल गेट्स से मुलाकात की।
• रक्षा सचिव राजेश कुमार ने कहा कि आतंकवाद एक गतिशील और उभरती हुई चुनौती बनी हुई है, उन्नत प्रौद्योगिकी के उपयोग के लिए एक सामंजस्यपूर्ण और कार्रवाई-उन्मुख दृष्टिकोण की आवश्यकता है। उन्होंने आसियान रक्षा मंत्रियों’ की 14वीं बैठक में मुख्य भाषण के दौरान ये टिप्पणी की।

• सरकार ने कम मूल्य वाले भीम-यूपीआई लेनदेन को बढ़ावा देने के लिए एक प्रोत्साहन योजना को मंजूरी दी। यह योजना एक हजार ५०० करोड़ रुपये के अनुमानित परिव्यय पर लागू की जाएगी।

International Updates

• Turkish authorities have detained Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as part of an investigation into corruption and terror links. The state-run Anadolu Agency reported that prosecutors also issued warrants for around 100 other people, including businessmen and journalists.

• In a move to foster collaboration and development in the automobile industry, an 18-member delegation from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers visited Sri Lanka this week. The delegation called on Sri Lanka’s Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunneththi.

• The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which had held for nearly two months, came to an abrupt end yesterday as Israeli airstrikes targeted Gaza, resulting in over 400 reported casualties, according to health authorities.

• Sri Lanka’s economy recorded a robust 5.4 per cent growth in the fourth quarter of 2024, marking its strongest expansion since the nation began its recovery in mid-2023.

• Amid growing security concerns and the aggressive posturing of China, Taiwan has stated that it has detected a number of Chinese aircraft and warships operating around the country over the past 24 hours.
