- मुंबई में सचिन के क्रिकेट से संन्यास लेने के संकल्प के बाद ही भारत सरकार ने भी देश के सबसे बड़े नागरिक सम्मान भारत रत्न देने की आधिकारिक घोषणा कर दी। 40 वर्ष की आयु मे इस सम्मान को प्राप्त करने वाले वे सबसे कम उम्र के व्यक्ति और सर्वप्रथम खिलाड़ी हैं। गौरतलब है कि इससे पहले यह सम्मान खेल के क्षेत्र में नहीं दिया जाता था। सचिन को यह सम्मान देने के लिए पहले नियमों में बदलाव किया गया था।
