Domestic PNG vs LPG: What’s the Difference?

Cooking fuels are an essential part of every home, and in India, two of the most common options are domestic PNG (Piped Natural Gas) and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). Both serve the same purpose—cooking meals—but they differ in several key ways.

What Is Domestic PNG?

  • PNG (Piped Natural Gas) is natural gas supplied directly to homes through pipelines.

  • It is composed mainly of methane and is delivered continuously, so there’s no need for cylinder replacement.

  • PNG is widely available in urban areas through city gas distribution networks.

What Is LPG?

  • LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is a compressed mixture of propane and butane stored in cylinders.

  • Unlike PNG, LPG is delivered in bottles, which need to be replaced or refilled when empty.

  • It is available in both urban and rural areas and is subsidized under government schemes in India.

  • Advantages of PNG

    1. No cylinder storage needed, freeing up space.

    2. Continuous and uninterrupted supply, especially useful for large families.

    3. Lower carbon footprint compared to LPG.

    Advantages of LPG

    1. Widely available, even in remote areas where pipelines are not installed.

    2. Portable—cylinders can be taken anywhere.

    3. Subsidies make it affordable for many households in India.
