National Updates

• Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said 73 major stations facing rush situations will have a Station Director empowered to take “on-the-spot decongesting decisions ” during festive rush.

• The External Affairs Ministry has categorically rejected the references to India in a UK Parliamentary Committee report, and termed these as baseless allegations. In response to media queries, Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said these claims stem from unverified and dubious sources.

• The Embassy of India in Dublin has advised all Indian citizens in Ireland to take reasonable precautions for their security and avoid deserted areas, especially in odd hours. In an advisory issued, the Embassy said there has been an increase in instances of physical attacks.

• Hindi Movie 12th Fail has won the Best Film Award in the 71st National Film Awards. Announcing the awards in New Delhi, Chairman of Jury (Feature Film) Ashutosh Gowariker said, Shah Rukh Khan and Vikrant Massey have won the National Film Awards in Best Actor category.

• The Election Commission published the draft electoral roll for Bihar prepared under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign.

International updates

• Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia wants a lasting and stable peace in Ukraine, adding that Moscow’s conditions for peace remain unchanged. Mr. Putin has consistently rejected calls to pause nearly three-and-a-half year conflict with Ukraine despite growing pressure from US.

• Israeli warplanes carried out intensive airstrikes on multiple areas in eastern and southern Lebanon, targeting sites belonging to the Lebanese group Hezbollah. Meanwhile, in a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its Air Force struck strategic weapon production and storage sites.

• Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the government to develop a roadmap for building Russia’s high-speed rail network by March 31, 2026. Russian President also ordered the government and Russia’s largest lender to outline plans for utilising 300 billion rubles allocated.

• The United States (US) has reduced its tariff rate on goods from Bangladesh to 20 per cent, a significant reduction from the previous 35 per cent, after a final round of intense negotiations in Washington.

• US President Donald Trump signed an executive order raising tariffs on dozens of key trading partners around the world. The new tariffs aim to reduce trade deficits that the administration says harm the US economy and national security.

• Bangladesh’s first National Multidimensional Poverty Index uncovers harsh realities for children and the people living in the country, especially in the eastern divisions, said UNICEF in a press release.

Sports Updates

• Indian Navy Football Team (INFT) earned a crucial 2-1 win over rival Real Kashmir FC (RKFC) in a closely contested Group F encounter of the 134th Indian Oil Durand Cup 2025 played at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium in Imphal.

• Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar unveiled the mascot of Asia Rugby Under 20 ( Sevens) Championship to be held at Rajgir on 9th and 10th August. Under the Championship Men’s and Women’s teams of Asia will lock horns for the trophy at Rajgir Sports Complex.

• In Badminton, second-seed Lakshya Sen has advanced to the Men’s singles semifinal of Macau Open after defeating Zhu Xuan Chen of China 21-14, 18-21, 21-14 at East Asian Games Dome.

• Indian women wrestlers delivered an impressive performance at the 2025 U17 World Wrestling Championships in Athens, securing a total of five medals, including two gold, two silver.
